05:00 am - Gravity Wells
This doesn't take into account the energy imparted by orbital motion (or gravity assists or the Oberth effect), all of which can make it easier to reach outer planets.

11:00 pm - Feature: Dropped DSL and missing e-mail: two tales of moving woes

Dealing with ISPs and the assorted headaches that come along with having broadband service are a way of life for most of us. When you rely on a steady broadband connection for your job and your livelihood, what might otherwise be nagging connection drops or e-mail snafus become blood-pressure-raising, hair-pulling struggles.

In recent months, Science Editor John Timmer and Senior Editor Nate Anderson moved to new homes in Brooklyn, New York and Wheaton, Illinois, respectively. Being the conscientious technology writers that they are—and knowing that they'd need to hit the ground running in their new home offices—they made sure to do what they could to make the broadband transition from one home to another go as smoothly as possible. Despite their best efforts, the transition was anything but smooth.

Here are their tales.

08:00 pm - Alien Breed Evolution brings back classic Amiga game

Alien Breed is a game that some remember with great enthusiasm, while others respond with blank stares when the title is brought up. A hit on the Amiga, the top-down title was a little bit Gauntlet, a little bit Doom, and a little bit Aliens. The update is out now on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 points ($10), and it's coming to both the PC and the PlayStation Network in 2010.

Without having played the original—I received a gentle mocking for that shortcoming by Team 17 itself at an early GDC where I was able to play an early version of the game—this is one I'm going to have to judge on its own merits.

05:00 pm - An updated guide to Facebook privacy: December 2009 edition

By now, most Facebook users are aware by some means or another that the company has made changes to its privacy settings. Though these updates have largely been controversial, there are a handful of changes that are actually good and some that are at least neutral. They are also just different enough (but in a subtle way) to make our previous Facebook privacy guide a little outdated, so we thought we would go over some of the settings again to help our readers lock down their profiles as they please.

The good news: you can still divide up your friends into lists—as many or as few lists as you like! As we discussed in our previous privacy guide, the reason you want to do this is so you can divvy up permissions (which we will show you later), and you can do this by going to your Friends > All Friends > Create a new list.

02:00 pm - Weird Science videotapes "explosive" duck erections

Explosive penises and the anatomical prevention of duck rape: You may not have known this (most of the Ars staff didn't), but most birds copulate without the benefit of a penis. One of the primary exceptions to this are, of all creatures, ducks. As it turns out, male and female ducks have elaborate and rapidly evolving genitalia. There appears to be a behavioral habit driving this evolution: duck rape or, more properly, forced copulation. It seems that males tend to force themselves on females, and females have been evolving convoluted reproductive passages in order to thwart them.

The paper in question here actually capture video of the male erection process, which normally takes place inside the female: "Eversion of the 20 cm muscovy duck penis is explosive, taking an average of 0.36 s, and achieving a maximum velocity of 1.6 m s−1." But the female reproductive tract contains awkward bends and blind alleys that can apparently stop the process cold, allowing the female a degree of control over the father of her offspring, regardless of how aggressive he may be.
