An excellent, though extremely dark and brooding, movie. If you're clever, you'll pick up the major plot turns about halfway through the movie, but you'll (at least, I did) remain captivated enough to simply "oooh!" to yourself and keep watching.

One warning, though: the trailers make this movie appear to be a story about stage magic vs. real magic. That, it is not. It is a complex story, and not a pretty one - you may or may not choose to cast any of its characters as villains, in your own mind, but you almost certainly won't cast any as heroes. This is a story about brooding, malignant obsession, through and through.

Yeah, I liked it too. It's nice to see Christian Bale actually using his native accent, for once.

And I don't know about you, but I kept on thinking "Damn, Bowie looks old!"

oooh - I thought it looked good until the trailer made it look like they were adding in the "real magic" bit. If it is not adding that extra unworldy aspect, I'll have to go see it

I felt like the major plot turn was so obvious, that it must have been given away on purpose. There were still a lot of people around me who seemed surprised at the end. There was one poor chap who was still a bit confused even as his girlfriend explained it to him on the escalators leaving the building.

I liked the movie a lot though. It made me wish I had seen the Illusionist while it was out.

Thankfully, The Illusionist is still at the dollar theatre here. I'm going to see it with a friend Thursday.
