02:45 am - Sharing a techno-dork moment

I got a wild hair this week, and decided it was time to update "ph34r", my file/web/mail/DNSserver.  It's not like I had a good reason; it spent its life pretty thoroughly bored already.  And for the most part, doing what I do for a living, I'd gotten over spending too much money on faster hardware than I really need some years ago.  But I just couldn't resist the idea of running a completely 64-bit server.

So, a few hundred bucks of hardware and a few hours of labor later, ph34r's reincarnated as a fully 64-bit FreeBSD 5.2.1 monstrosity.  Good god that thing is ridiculously fast.  And yes, being about 5 years ahead of Microsoft's power curve does, in fact, give me w00d.  But that's not the dork moment - the dork moment is that P33T decided to refer to operating the machine as "hittin' switches in tha six-fo'."

And I laughed, and decided to use a server case that I had lying around that had accidentally gotten shipped with a side and top acrylic window that I didn't order... that way, I could be hittin' switches in my drop-top six-fo.

P33t remarked "you know, Jim, we laugh, but in some ways we're really pathetic."  But when it comes right down to it... I'd much rather do this than actually roll around Compton in a 40-year old Chevy with goofy-ass wheels and hydraulics while trading ill-aimed potshots with my peers.

It's all good.

When you have it glowing like a neon Christmas tree, sucking most of the power out of the room just to light up all the shit you got in there, then you're computer thuggin.

I wish my husband would stop ricing out his computer. But yes, it is better than him trying to put a wing on my Plymouth Neon.

Straight outta...

This may be stating the obvious, but Compton is a fucking pit. Two notches down from the neighborhood in Friday. Went there once with a friend to buy stolen tires, will never go again. Forget random gunfire - just opening your eyes there is a miserable experience.

Machines!

Let it be known that there is nothing wrong with having something you don't need just so long as you want what you have.

Re: Machines!

That seems like a comment better suited to Q than to M. :)
