08:44 am - tech support mind-boggler of the day
[nice person]: "Hi, this is [nice person] at [customer office] - I need you to come empty my modem - it's full."
[me]: "Ummm... you... wait, can you run that by me again?"
[nice person]: "My modem is full, so it takes forever to dial up on the internet. I need you to come clean it out."

... wow.

(Turned out her phone cord was too long, if anybody cares.)

the cord was too long and it made her modem full....did you tell her to cut it in half to decrease latency?

How long is too long? I did not realize that had such an impact. Something to take into account when you're splitting a 56k dialup six different ways across three floors...

Yeah, sometimes them reject bits'll get stuck in that narrow circuitry 'cause of a flaw in their routing (they don't know whichaways to go) or they might just be bent.

Thing to do is crack open the modem and blow 'em right outa there. Then take a cotten swab with a little alchohol on it (Jack Daniels'll do it) and wipe up the ones that are stuck, 'specially through them logic switches.

Then put the modem back together and stick it back in the port and boot 'er up. Should run like new.
